Tantalus, who was allowed by the gods to partake in their feasts and listen to their counsel, grew proud and insolent. When he commited a crime, he was sent to Tartarus. Legend says that he told the secrets of the gods. In Tartarus (Hell) he was 'tantalized' by being placed in water which receded when he tried to drink, surrounded by trees whose fruits disappeared when he tried to touch them. A never ending thirst and hunger for eternity. The unattainable desire.

In another legend Sisyphus truthfully informed Asopus that Zeus was the god who had kidnapped Asopus' daughter, Aegina. Zeus condemned Sisyphus to Tartarus and the eternal labor of having to roll a stone up a hill only to have it roll to the bottom on the other side. The impossible task.
